When you buy local, you help build stronger communities. Local businesses buy from other businesses in the community — growers, makers, manufacturers, graphic designers, accountants, repair services and credit unions, just to name a few. Granville Island is a hotbed of independent businesses, with many artisans, food producers, shops and food services. Those businesses support great local jobs, other B.C. businesses and local charities –supporting a strong community and B.C. economy.
Granville island is not only a human-made island but is also Federal land, currently under the administration of the federal government. For this reason, municipal land-use rule do not apply on Granville Island. Which offers freedom from market forces, allowing the subsidization and incubation of social innovation and experimentation. In the 1970’s the people of Vancouver voted that Granville Island become a “People’s Place”, an urban park zoned for urban experimentation, innovation and the nurturing of arts and culture. A vision that is as relevant today, as it was then!
The B.C. Buy Local campaign encourages consumers to shift at least 1% of their spending — just $15 — to a local business, or a local grown or local made product. If all consumers make a 1% shift, it will create 3,100 jobs and sends $94M in wages to workers in B.C. Check out more reasons to buy local.
