Groove Cat Books & Records

Collage of Groove Cat Books & Records New Westminster BC

Groove Cat Books and Records is a community hub where people can browse books and listen to music as long as they like. We are stocked with everything from classic novels to mysteries, philosophy, historical titles and much more. Our vinyl record options are just as diverse, with selections of rock, jazz, blues, punk & electronica along with all kinds of miscellaneous genres. We also host musical gigs, hold cool seasonal storytelling events & have a book club featuring local authors. So come on down, bring a coffee or tea, play your favourite records, curl up on our couch with a good book & hang out with our (very) friendly shop cat, Luna!

Question: How are you supporting other local businesses?

Answer: As a used book and record shop, we have available an abundance of titles, as well as art, crafted by local writers, musicians and artists. For example, we have several titles by New Westminster writer, Winona Kent, New West writers Carol & Rick Blacklaws, Alan Haig-Brown, Bryce Raffle & Steven Kothlow all have books on our shelves. Additionally, we have Margaret Franz’s book “Between the Blade & Bullet,” which chronicles an important piece of New Westminster history. New West resident, Lena Gibson, has her book, “The Wish” on our shelves, and we also carry Richard Chapman’s “Columbia Strip”.

We are also participating in the New West Culture Crawl, hosting the “Poetic Justice” poetry reading on October 15, 2023, featuring local poets Alan Hill; Jessica Lee McMillan and Aidan Chafe.

As for local music, members of The Pointed Sticks, DOA and solo artist, Joe Keithley have made their music available on our shelves. Local guitarist, Daniel Karrasch has performed here at the shop; as has Jesse Lee Schulte.

We carry prints and shirts by local Indigenous artist, Blue Sky (aka Jay Groening) and calendars by New West photographer, Rob Matharu.

Question: What social and environmental practices are you proud of?

Answer: We collect money for the New West Animal Shelter & offer a matching trade credit of up to $10.00 on donations. Environmentally, as sellers of used books & records, we keep tonnes of material out of landfills.
