Roots and Wings Distillery is a family-owned and operated craft distillery based in the heart of the Fraser Valley, near Fort Langley. Their 30-acre Langley Farm, in the fertile valley of the mighty Fraser River, has been in our family for 3 generations. It started as a produce farm then became a sod farm, and today, it is a combination of both. They are committed to being as sustainable as possible by growing their own potatoes and corn, as well as using our land’s source of natural spring water, for distillation.
As a micro distiller, we believe that small batch production allows for more experimentation and creativity. Our distilled liquor will have unique flavour profiles influenced by our own crops and natural spring water. The on-site distillation process began with a 30-gallon copper kettle still and have now moved into a 500 gallon stripping still/ whiskey still as well as a 100 gallon spirits still.
Inspired by their agricultural roots and their passion to craft uniquely distilled spirits from quality products that they lovingly grow on their farm, their collection of seed-to-sip spirits includes vodka, whiskey, gin, absinthe and liqueurs that can be enjoyed on their own or in your favourite craft cocktails and mixed drinks. The first and only in Langley, their craft distillery opened in February 2017 with the release of their inaugural B.C. artisan spirit – Vital Vodka (potato-corn), followed by a coffee-infused vodka – Double Vice, an unaged corn whiskey – Rebel, and a potato-corn gin – Jackknife Gin.
As of 2022, they have 40 different to choose from. They welcome visitors to enjoy craft cocktails featuring artisan spirits and to browse their bar gift shop.
Question: How are you supporting other local businesses?
Answer: On our lounge menu, we offer food items made by local chefs and local restaurants such as the Raving Gamer Bistro, Salt and Thyme catering, La Focceria, and Golden Ears Cheesecrafters.
In our cocktails, we have the great privilege to use many local syrups, honey, bitters, spices, and juices. Some of our everyday go-to accoutrements that go into our crafty cocktails are sourced from FrostBite Cordials, Organic Fair, BC Buzz Honey, Fume-eh Gourmet, Sassy Frass Kitchenary, and The Riverside Bog. Not only do we use these in our cocktails but we resell them in our retail store as well.
Question: What social and environmental practices are you proud of?
Answer: Our environmental practices start from beginning to end of the distilling process. We grow everything we ferment, distill and flavour our spirits with. Afterwards, we compost the spent mash back into our fields.
Socially, we are proud to partner on various fundraising activities for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice several times a year. Along with raising money for other local causes such as the Hug-a-Bull Foundation and the Surrey Firefighters Pipes and Drums band.
