Question: How are you supporting other local businesses?
Answer: We support local businesses as often as we are able; we have supplied products proudly from Canada, sourced from coast to coast to coast. We have always put effort into finding local
products made and produced in Canada. We can’t say enough good about the local businesses we work with. We do our best to carry local products for our store merchandise. We have art from local photographers like local artist Alan Colton, handmade cards, jewellery, pottery By Shawny Metz and soaps, Moody Bee lip balm, delicious honey from Bulkley Valley Hive and Honey, candles from Honey Candles, West Coast Seeds, dehydrated meals from Fresh Trek, spices and baking supplies from West Point Naturals and supplements from Jamieson Vitamins, Webber Naturals, and Organika to name a few. Our generic brand Health One, is from Toronto. We also stock Ascent Coffee (Terrace), who do a lot for the community – a couple of their blends have 100% of the profits that go right back into the community, and they do a lot for the local mountain biking community.
We also choose local suppliers for our pharmacy medications. There are Canadian and U.S. drug companies to choose from, and we try to keep it Canadian for our primary suppliers. We’d rather prioritize a Canadian company rather than chase the best price. Sometimes the Canadian supplier is the best price, but no matter what we’re trying to prioritize Canadian suppliers.
For service providers, we choose to use small local businesses rather than large corporations whenever possible. Pyramid Office Supplies have provided us with some of our supplies for many years, and we use a small local shredding company (The Confidential Shredding Company) based in Terrace. John at Beitz Computers & Office Supplies has gone above and beyond countless times to help us when we have IT issues. We trust Phil’s Mobile, a family-owned automotive shop, for our vehicle servicing.
Question: What social and environmental practices are you proud of?
Answer: Rainforest Wellness supports and sponsors many groups, clubs and events throughout the year with donations of varying levels. We donate items for raffles, make monetary donations, and try to support as many as we can. One of our biggest events that we support every year is the United Way Period Poverty program which works to provide feminine hygiene products to girls and women in our community who are unable to afford the products themselves.
We have 5 full-time, and 2 part-time staff. We do our best to be a good employer, providing flexible hours to ensure our staff can maintain a work-life balance with school, family or other priorities. We also coordinate gratitude lunches or special events so our staff feel appreciated.
We do our best to recycle everything we can in the store and use a local recycling company for products that are not accepted at our local depot. We offer our patients a medication disposal program operated by a Canadian company as well as a sharps disposal program.
