Question: How are you supporting other local businesses?

Answer: I buy so much of my inventory from B.C. businesses! About 80% of my inventory comes from a local growers co-operative that conducts a Dutch-style floral market that is the second largest in the world. There is a huge selection of B.C. grown products, and all the flowers come directly from growers in North America.

In terms of services, I do so many things myself. That’s the crazy life of a small business owner! So web design, social media, marketing, etc. is all kept local because it’s done in house by me. For many of the things I can’t do, I work with B.C. suppliers. My accountant is local. I contract a local driver for deliveries, and when I’m super busy and need extra support, I use a locally owned delivery service (not Fedex).

Question: What social and environmental practices are you proud of?

Answer: I feel passionate about giving back to the community, and spend quite a bit of time coordinating a community donation program to support various charities and people in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES) living with mental health, addiction and homelessness. Several times a year we collect gently used items like clothing, blankets, toiletries and food. In June we coordinate Duffels for Dudes for Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month; for Valentine’s Day we coordinate Project Purse for women and in December we donate Xmas Stockings. We collect useful items with  a bag, purse or stocking to donate them in. People bring these items into us and we pass them along to someone in need. To date we have hand delivered ~700 purses to women working and living in shelters and on the streets of the DTES. We offer a 10% discount off your next purchase (holiday exempt) when you bring in a full bag to support this program.
