Question: How are you supporting other local businesses?
Answer: A lot of of our suppliers are local businesses. About 85% of our products are grown right here in B.C. In some months of the year we have to look further afield, so about 5% come from the rest of Canada. Some of the products we love are flour, sugar, locally grown tomatoes, and locally roasted coffee from JJ Bean Organic Coffee. We use local service companies almost exclusively – for 95% of our services! We use local food distributors as much as possible – we love Snowcap, and they have a lot of good relationships with local suppliers, so we get lots of great local products from them. We also buy from Yen Brothers, Hills Legacy Meats, and Cioffi’s. buy our office supplies from Madill Office Supplies, use Waste Control Services (WCS) for waste management, and buy our insurance from Westland. We use New Tech Appliance for repairs, use Seabreeze Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, get our materials printed at Precision Graphics and use Instant Imprints for our uniforms.
Question: What social and environmental practices are you proud of?
Answer: We love to support local organizations based on the North Shore, and donate to so many causes. We’re especially proud of our support of West Vancouver’s non-profit daycare. We provide baked goods for events, donate gift cards for staff occasions, and coordinate a silent auction to generate funds for this important organization in our community. In the past year alone we donated $14,000.
On the environmental side, we have worked hard to reduce our waste to a minimum. All of our packaging is compostable except for our cutlery. We also hire locally, so our employees don’t commute far. We have 17 full-time (equivalent) employees, and they all live in West Vancouver or nearby in North Vancouver. Two of our local employees moved a bit further away in Metro Vancouver, but they lived locally when we hired them!
