TwoChiefs is a 100% Indigenous-owned and operated retail shop located on the traditional territory of Xwchíyò:m (Cheam) First Nation (Stó:lō and Coast Salish peoples) in Rosedale, BC, and founded by Kirkland Douglas, a member of the Xwchíyò:m First Nation. TwoChiefs carries a curated selection of products made and designed by Indigenous artists and makers from across Canada, including mugs, blankets, art prints, soaps, candles, jewellery, coffee, and cosmetics. The name honours two generations of leadership: Chief Hielamacha (Sam Douglas) and Chief Xéylamá:ytel (Lincoln Douglas). TwoChiefs is not a marketplace; it’s a destination where every product tells a real story about real artists and real nations.
Question: How are you supporting other local businesses?
Answer: We support other local suppliers and Indigenous-owned businesses. Some of the Local and BC-based suppliers we carry are:
- RavenSong Soap & Candle — A BC-based Indigenous artisan producer making soaps, candles, and bath products by hand in British Columbia.
- Spirit Bear Coffee — An Indigenous-owned organic fair-trade coffee company roasting in BC.
One of the things we’re most proud of is the Xwchíyò:m (Cheam) Independent Business Directory — a free listing page we built and host on our website. Cheam First Nation has strong corporate enterprises, but independent Cheam entrepreneurs didn’t have a place to be found and celebrated. We created this directory to fill that gap. Any independent Cheam band member entrepreneur can list their business there. Current listings include a jewellery artist, a consulting firm, a smoked salmon business, a custom apparel maker, and more.
Some of our community collaborations are:
- Trev’s Flea Market (Cheam First Nation) — We support and help promote the Sunday Flea Market run by Trevor Victor at the Cheam band office (every Sunday at 52161 Victor Drive from 8:30 am–2:30 pm). It’s a space for local vendors and entrepreneurs to sell directly to the community.
- Nikki LaRock, Coast Salish Artist — We commissioned Nikki to create TwoChiefs’ original horse design and Feathers logo. Rather than using generic or stock imagery for our brand identity, we went directly to an Indigenous artist from our region to create something authentic and meaningful.
Question: What social and environmental practices are you proud of?
Answer: TwoChiefs is 100% Indigenous-owned and operated — that is the foundation of everything we do. Every purchase directly supports an Indigenous business, and every supplier and artist we carry is chosen because they are Indigenous-owned or work in genuine partnership with Indigenous communities and artists. We are located on Cheam First Nation land and are an active part of that community. Providing local employment opportunities when possible and building an Indigenous retail presence in the Fraser Valley matters to us. We carry Native Northwest‘s orange shirt collection, which supports their Reconciliation Fund — purchases of those products contribute directly to that initiative.
We make eco-friendly packaging choices where possible and prioritize suppliers who share our values around sustainable production. This includes RavenSong Soap & Candle, which handcrafts its products in small batches in BC, and Cheekbone Beauty, which uses biodegradable packaging and is committed to sustainable cosmetics manufacturing.
