Question: What social and environmental practices are you proud of?
Answer: I try to be a great employer, and treat my staff well. I provide them with full benefits through the Squamish Chamber, and I pay 100% of their MSP premiums too. It’s just something else I can do that helps them so there’s not one more thing out of pocket for them. I shut down the shop for two weeks at Christmas, and all staff get that as paid time off. I also take the staff out for lunch every Friday. It’s a nice weekly “hey, thanks for working hard”, and helps us all transition into the weekend nicely.
We support local groups – mostly the Squamish Offroad Cycling Association (SORCA) . They do a “Tooney Tuesday” trail riding event to fund trail maintenance, and we sponsor the food after. We host a BBQ at the shop with a next door neighbour auto body shop. About 150-300 people show up, and we do it twice a year. So many of our customers are mountain bikers, so it makes a lot of sense for us to give back to an organization that supports that community.
We recycle everything we can from the shop, including our oil and coolant. Nothing goes to the landfill except plastics. Another thing we do is help extend the life of logging truck tires by retreading them. Treads West puts new rubber treads on the old casing. This prevents the purchase of cheap new tires from offshore, and the reuse of the existing product.
